CORNELIUS DAVID KRIEGHOFF (CANADIAN 1815-1872) |
|
A painting bought in Glasgow’s Barrowland Market thirty years ago for “ten bob” (£0.50p) sold for £34,800 at auction at Lyon and Turnbull’s Edinburgh auction rooms.
The painting entitled “Chopping logs outside a snow covered cabin” is by Canada’s most important painter Cornelius David Krieghoff. Originally from Holland Kreighoff emigrated to Canada and married a French Canadian. The owner, who wishes to remain anonymous and now lives abroad, said “ I am surprised and delighted that my find has turned out to be such a worthwhile investment. I originally bought the picture because I liked it, having no idea that one day it would be worth so much.”
The painting depicts a log cabin in Krieghoff’s adopted Canada, preserving a way of life and customs that would have ordinarily been lost.
Nick Curnow, Head of Pictures and Managing Director of Lyon and Turnbull said “It is the sort of find everybody dreams of. Krieghoff is one of Canada’s most accomplished and important artists. He was born in Amsterdam in the early nineteenth century and married a French Canadian in Manhattan which is what persuaded him to move to Canada. He depicts ordinary people with sympathy, humour, attention to detail, and a lack of idealisation.”
The painting was bought by an anonymous buyer.
