Sir David Young Cameron

‘Old Paris ’ oil on canvas

Sir David Young Cameron, painter and etcher, was a very influential figure in the art world of London and Edinburgh for much of the first half of the twentieth century.

A son of the manse, Cameron was born in Glasgow and trained at Glasgow School of Art and in Edinburgh .  He established an early reputation as an etcher of note, but it is chiefly as a painter of the Scottish landscape that he is remembered today.  Cameron drew inspiration from a broad range of subject matter, travelling widely throughout a long working life.  He excelled at portraying architecture and his depictions of the backstreets of Paris and towns and villages of Belgium , France and Italy – oils and watercolours as well as etchings – compete for attention with his views of the majestic mountains of Argyll and Perthshire.  Cameron was also a very influential figure in the art establishment of Scotland and of England in the 1920s and ‘30s, serving as a Trustee of both the Tate Gallery and the National Galleries of Scotland .

The exhibition will feature over thirty of Cameron’s oils, watercolours and drawings from the Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation and other collections, both public and private.
